Control System for subsea Mattress Retrieval Tool (MRT)

This project involved designing and delivering two 8-channel NG10 subsea valve packs to control a Mattress Retrieval Tool (MRT) for offshore decommissioning on the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). With 39,042 subsea mattresses to be recovered by 2031, these valve packs were essential for ensuring efficient and precise MRT operations.

The project was executed by a multidisciplinary team, including mechanical, software, and electrical engineers, supported by skilled mechanical and electrical technicians for the assembly and testing of the valve packs. Each valve pack featured 5 proportional and 3 on/off NG10 valves, pressure sensors, and a water ingress sensor, housed in an aluminium manifold and POM casing.

The objectives for the project were:

  1. Design and Manufacture: Develop two NG10 valve packs to control the MRT’s 8 arms, which adjust and grasp mattresses, and its two thrusters for underwater manoeuvring.
  1. Custom Control System: Create an intuitive laptop-based GUI for real-time MRT management.
  1. Testing, Deployment, and Comprehensive Support: Ensure system reliability through rigorous testing and provide extensive post-delivery support to guarantee seamless operation.

Midway through the second delivery, customer feedback of a previously delivered project necessitated a redesign of the manifold to ensure easier access. Our team quickly implemented the changes, minimizing delays and maintaining project momentum.

Throughout the project, we provided continuous support to ensure proper communication between the valve packs, the laptop, and the MRT. We assisted the client in designing their systems and optimizing integration. After a successful Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) at our facilities in Kanalveien, our team offered ongoing commissioning support and troubleshooting, ensuring the valve packs communicated flawlessly with the MRT.

This comprehensive, cross-disciplinary support, including remote assistance was key to the project’s success, significantly contributing to the decommissioning efforts on the UKCS.
